Final Club night cancelled for 2017

Sadly the final club night has been cancelled for 2017. This is due to the disagreeable weather and the cancellation of school for Friday 31/March. We will see everyone at the Club Championships on April 23rd. Regards Tina Ramsay

The revamp of our school pool has not yet been completed. That means we have been forced to make some significant changes to Friday night club nights for the next few weeks or so. Here are the highlights:
  • We have negotiated with the managers of the Yeronga Park swimming pool to hire their 25m pool. We only have access to the 25m pool and we can't use it until 6pm.
  • You will need to OPT IN for races by Wednesday afternoon to let us know that you are coming.
  • Our club's normal BBQ and canteen service will not be available. We will find out if the canteen at Yeronga will be open and let you know. Please note that alcohol is not allowed.
  • The Graceville State School team for the District swimming trials is currently being organised by Mr Daunt. The trials will be on 6 Feb (the Monday of week 3). So the first 2 club nights at Yeronga will be a good opportunity for those selected to get a bit of race practice in before the day.

MS Swimathon - Graceville Lightning team

We all had so much fun on Sunday 6th November 2016 participating in the 12 hour MS Swimathon.

With the help of all the wonderful sponsors and of course the participants, we have raised an incredible $3881 to support people living with multiple sclerosis. The club donated $500 from the money raised from the meat tray raffle ticket sales in the weeks prior to the swimathon.

    Stats from the day.

  • We had 28 team members ranging in age from 6 - 40+. Of these 21 were primary school aged children from our club.
  • We swam for 12 hours.
  • We swam approx 760 laps (50m laps). Which equates to a whoppping 38km of swimming.
  • We were the 2nd highest fundraising team at the Jindalee event. We did this in 5 days. The highest fundraising team was Team MS who had a member that raised over $5000. Amazing job to her!!

  • The donations have gone directly towards a wide range of local services and support programs for people living with MS, to help improve their quality of life. Some of these services simply would not be possible without the support received from these donations.

    Photos from the day

    We really appreciate your support!

    Thank you.

The 50th birthday party for the Graceville State School pool is just weeks away - and it promises to be a fun family celebration. Please read this email to get a full update of activities for the day, and then click on the link below to fill out the survey by November 10. All members should complete the survey, even if your family is not coming on the day, as this will help us firm up numbers. This is crucial for the organisation of the day, especially for catering purposes.

The party will be held on Sunday, November 27. The schedule is as follows:

11am-12.50pm – a swim clinic hosted by Swimming Queensland. The clinic will include a short video presentation followed by a series of drills covering skills and techniques for all strokes. This clinic will be of great benefit to our swimmers as they look to improve their techniques. The session will end with relays. Please note that because of the level of the clinic and the need to limit numbers in the pool, only swimmers who have qualified for at least one 50m event at a club night this season will be able to nominate for this clinic (if you think your child may be close to qualifying for their first 50m event in the next few weeks please add their name and we will keep an eye on their times. If they are in the last 25m race for a stroke then they are probably close.) In the event that more than 36 swimmers nominate for the clinic, the committee will make a final decision on who can attend. Preference will be given to swimmers who have attended at least four of the seven club nights for this season up to November 18, but other eligibility criteria may also apply.

1pm-1.30pm – Rio Olympian and butterfly champion Grant Irvine will give a presentation, followed by an autograph-signing session. All families and children are invited to attend this section of the event and meet a real-life Olympian!

1.30pm-2pm – Official speeches and unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Tennyson Ward councillor Nicole Johnston to mark the 50th birthday of the pool. Other dignitaries will also attend, and all families and children are invited to this section of the event. Free commemorative T-shirts will be handed out to Graceville Lightning child members on the day, while those who cannot attend the party will be able to pick up their T-shirts on a club night.

2-4pm – a barbecue and pool party for parents and children. This will feature a free barbecue and one free juice for children. Alcohol, ice-creams and lollies will be for sale at the canteen. The party will include music and fun games and activities.

Here is the survey link. Please fill in this survey to let us know if your child is interested in participating in the swim clinic; how many members of your family will be attending the party; and the T-shirts sizes of your children. Remember, every club swimmer will get a shirt even if they don't attend on the day.

As mentioned, this survey must be completed by Thursday, November 10, so we can organise catering and T-shirts.

We look forward to your participation in this significant club event.

Please feel free to email me at if you have any queries.

    Presentation Day

A reminder that there is no club swimming this Friday! The season is finished, but it would be great to see as many children and parents as possible attend the club Presentation Day on Sunday 20th March, which starts at 2pm

The club Presentation Day is an important event that wraps up the season. It will run for a couple of hours from 2pm this Sunday. The age champions will be given their trophies, race winners will get their medals, and the points tally winners will receive their prizes. A limited barbecue and canteen service will also be operating. It's a great way to sign off for 2015-16, so we hope to see you there. There will be a free swim for the children after presentations and during the Annual General Meeting (lifeguards will be on duty).

Did you know? Facts and figures from this season
Well, it has been a huge season for Graceville Lightning, as the following numbers demonstrate:

    From the pool ...
    • 219 - the number of active swimmers throughout the season
    • 26 - the number of pool records broken this season, including a championship record that was set way back in 1980.
    • 14 - the number of swimmers who have broken records this season
    • 97 - the number of swimmers who set personal best times at the club championships
    • 252 - the total number of PBs set during the two days of the club championships
    • 9 - the number of Graceville Lightning swimmers who were selected for the Met-West regional trials this season in what is a super-competitive region.

    From the canteen...
During the 18 weeks of the season, we ate through more than:
    • 165 loaves of bread
    • 1125 bread rolls
    • 215kg (or 2580) sausages
    • 2680 kebabs
    • 1100 steaks
    • 50kg of onions
    • 50kg of tomatoes
    • 52 tins of beetroot

(And for the thirsty ones among us ... we consumed about 1200 cans of beer and 100 bottles of wine).

    P&L Cup - Friday 11th December

P&L Captains Cup Relay Fun night

Next week (Friday December 11) will be another special night courtesy of the P&L Captain's Cup, which gives children and their parents a rare chance to swim together. Remember, this is a team relay event consisting of two swimmers in each team - a senior (usually a parent) and a junior swimmer. To win the P&L Captain's Cup, you do not have to be the fastest team - just the most consistent in terms of matching a base time that you set in your first swim of the night.

NOW FOR THE IMPORTANT PART... To help with planning the event and to get a guide to numbers so we can properly stock the canteen and barbecue, we are asking families to email Sue-Ellen at by this SUNDAY EVENING, December 6, with their team names and participants (have some fun with your team names). Please let us know the total number of family members who are expected to attend, including non-participants. This will really help with catering.

While the highlight of the P&L Captain's Cup is seeing parents and children swim together, we understand that not all parents can or want to join in. So teams can be made up of two children (or a family friend or sibling). But one swimmer must be capable of swimming 50m, while the second swimmer will swim just 25m. Of course, some children may be better swimmers then their parents, so it's up to you as to who swims the 50m. There will be plenty of action and laughs, so please nominate by Sunday.

To begin, all teams swim once to set their base time. Each team then swims a second time. In order to make it to the semi-final, teams need to swim the same (or as close to) time as their original base time. The top 12 teams with times that are most consistent between their original base time and their second times move through to the Semi-Final. In order to qualify for the Final, teams need to swim a third time as near to their original base time. The final will consist of the 6 most consistent teams from the Semi-Final.  The team that finishes the final closest to their original base time will win the P&L Captain’s Cup.

The first swimmer for each team will be the fastest (usually the oldest) swimmer. The first swimmer must swim 50m Freestyle and the second swimmer must swim 25m Freestyle. Each swimmer will start from the blocks and  the relay will finish at the shallow end.

15m races may be run on the night if time permits. Anyone can come and compete. The program looks something like this:

    1. 15m Freestyle races (for whoever wants to swim) will be run at Committee discretion.
    2. First round of Relays (to determine the original base time).
    3. Second round of Relays
    4. Semi Finals of Relays
    5. Finals of Relays
    6. Announcement of the Winner of the P&L Captain's Cup

The P&L Captain’s Cup is a fun event which encourages parents, older siblings or older friends to swim with their younger swimmers. It is great for building friendships, role models or just having fun with Mum or Dad.
The winner receives a trophy and gets their name on the Official ‘P&L Captain's Cup’ trophy.

Welcome to the 2015 2016 season for GLSC

Welcome to all new and existing members of Graceville Amateur Swimming Club (aka Graceville Lightning Swimming Club) for the 2015/16 swimming season! We have a very strong community that fosters terrific swimming, healthy competition and, most importantly great fun and we look forward to another successful season.

My name is Tina Ramsay and this is my first year as Club President. We have a tremendous team this year that will continue to deliver great results and commitment to GLSC this season -

o    Vice President, Annie Madders (Saxon and Harvi's Mum)
    o    Vice President, vacant ()
o    Secretary, Shona Luke (Thomas and Lucy Webling’s Mum)
o    Treasurer, Vicky Hunterland (Lucy and Charlie's Mum)

No amateur sports club can operate without the generous support of its volunteers and we thank you in advance for your contribution.  We encourage all parents to participate in making Club nights a success, whether on the night or in the lead up in terms of meat or bread runs, providing salads, canteen serving or time keeping. Swim Club is a fabulous way to spend Friday evenings over summer, so please pitch in and have some fun.

We’ve steadily grown each season however in the past 2 years we have seen a massive growth in club numbers.  As a result we implemented a new streamlined approach to club nights last season. This new approach has created a much more efficient running schedule for the nights.  It does rely heavily on families letting us know prior to club night if they need to make any changes to the nominated races for their children.

We’re delighted that P and L Meats have, once again, agreed to sponsor us this season. Based at Oxley, P and L Meats provide us with the weekly meat raffle prize and significant discounts on our weekly orders for the BBQ. Their produce is of a consistently high standard and we encourage you to show them your support when choosing a butcher.

We would also like to thank Graceville State School for providing us the use of their pool. Many of our members are from the school community and without this access we could not operate such a locally focused event each Friday night. We also warmly welcome those outside the Graceville School community and encourage you to make GLSC your own, too.

The purpose of this handbook is to provide you with as much information as possible including the club program, rules and contact details. We want you to feel comfortable and confident in your decision to involve your kids in our Club. We encourage you to visit our website ( for regular club updates, news of upcoming events and carnivals, recorded race times and Club newsletters.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation at GLSC please do not hesitate to contact myself or any of the Club’s committee members. We welcome your thoughts and feedback and trust that you will enjoy the 2015/16 season.

Looking forward to this season and seeing you all on pool deck.

Swim hard and fast but most importantly have fun doing it!

    Oxley Road Cup

    Oxley Road Cup

Graceville Lightning put in an outstanding effort at ORC last Sunday and were once again victorious, retaining the ORC trophy for the third year running.

Thank-you to all our devoted volunteers who just make these events seamless. Not only were all the jobs taken for the day but there were a team of back ups when we needed them. It goes without saying, that our volunteers are the backbone of this club.

There were also a number of families who weren't competing but came along to show their support. Graceville Lightning is more than a Swim Club - it's a community to be proud of.
